About Eye Of The Sun

Eye of the Sun Surfboards is a core, surfer–shaper owned brand built from the ground up—rooted in the kind of hands-on experience that defines real surf culture. Come to fruition by the hands of Tommy George.
Surfing was there from the beginning. Raised in a classic beach town upbringing in Long Branch, New Jersey, Tommy was introduced to the ocean at a young age by his father—a surfer and lifelong waterman. Lifeguarding ran deep in the family. His dad, along with his three brothers and sister, all worked at Takanassee Beach, setting the tone early. That carried into the next generation, with older cousins as lifeguards and watermen who helped show the way and shape his connection to the ocean.
It started the way it should. Sweeping floors. Fixing dings. Learning by doing under Dave Grimes of Takanassee Handshapes. Long hours in the bay, figuring things out piece by piece—how to glass boards, how to shape, and why designs feel the way they do under your feet. Then washing off the dust with longboard sessions, surf history/life lessons and chasing elusive east coast tubes.
From there, Josh Peterson took notice of the crew and pushed things further—opening the door to time at The Heavens, learning from John Oppito, Mike Covello, Alex Gazones, and Phil Browne. More time, more reps, more perspectives—building a deeper understanding of the craft from every angle.
That path led to building a factory in his home town with Justin Perry and James Piehler—West Ave Glassing— where Eye of the Sun would come to life with the help of putting in the hours, building boards, and refining the process day in and day out.
The lust for exploration was there, denouncing the standard shortboard that seemed to be under everyone's chest on the east coast at the time. Hybrid twin fins, asymmetrical, single fin logs and barrel boards filled the racks at West Ave Glassing. The idea was to bring a new approach of to our classic Jersey barrels, and to refine classic designs for all different sessions at home and beyond. Every board was heavily tested in all conditions along the way. All for the love of surfing and the freedom to not miss a session on the bipolar Jersey coastline.
Winters were spent chasing waves and knowledge. Time in Panama working with JCS at Paunch Surf Corp and navigating the drops at Bluff Beach. Seasons on the North Shore of Hawaii learning from underground legend Brian King of Bra Bra Surfboards. Taking sprinkles from each place, each shaper, each environment—and bringing it all back to the bay.
More recently, influential time spent with Ryan Burch and Nico of Wave Gliders in Portugal has added new layers to the approach—different lines, different ways of thinking about speed, flow, and design.
That foundation still runs through everything. Every board is shaped from experience—time in the water, not theory. If it doesn’t translate in the surf, it doesn’t matter. Every planer pass comes with intention of the rider and the waves they want to surf in mind.
Eye of the Sun stays small on purpose. Hand-shaped, one at a time. No mass production, no chasing trends—just building boards for surfers who care about feel, flow, and cherish a board made by hand in the USA.
Rooted in East Coast conditions, where nothing is perfect and everything has to adapt, these boards are designed for real waves—but they’ve been tested far beyond that. From Puerto Escondido to Off The Wall to Supertubos and beyond, they’ve proven themselves in heavy water and serious lineups around the world.
At its core, the brand is about doing things the right way. Surfer-driven. Hands-on. Built through experience, not image
From sweeping up foam dust to shaping boards across the globe, Eye of the Sun is a reflection of the full process—work, craft, and a deep connection to surfing.
